Luna and Nala are two beautiful European lynxes who today live a safe and dignified life here at Odsherred Zoo Rescue.
But it has not always been that way. They were forcibly removed from a small Danish zoo back in 2011, as they were living in conditions that could not be approved by the authorities.
They were only seven months old when they came to us. Their entire upbringing had taken place in a stable of just 2 x 2 metres — with no access to daylight, no fresh air, and no space to move freely. Their trust in humans was minimal.
Nala reacted strongly to the change. In frustration, she repeatedly jumped against the wall of their new enclosure and ended up spraining her paw, requiring sedation and treatment. It was a tough start, but the beginning of a new and better life here at Rescue Zoo.
For the first many months, we only caught glimpses of them at night. During the day they stayed hidden, uncertain about their new surroundings and about us. But slowly they began to emerge. They found peace in their new enclosure, where they can choose for themselves when to be outside or inside, and where there is finally room to stretch their bodies, climb high, and breathe freely.
Today, Nala and Luna are calm and quiet souls, each with their own personality. Luna is the more curious and outgoing — especially when visitors stand by the fence. Nala is more cautious but still eagerly participates in the daily training sessions with their dedicated keeper, to whom they have formed strong bonds.
The two lynxes are siblings and will not be part of any breeding programme. They will stay with us for the rest of their lives and remain together, as they are used to. They are living proof that trust can be rebuilt, and that a good quality of life is always possible in the right environment — even when the starting point is difficult.
When you choose to support a specific story through a donation or subscription, you are supporting animals with similar backgrounds, needs, and histories, both now and in the future. Some of the animals featured in these stories still live at Rescue Zoo today, while others have sadly passed away of natural causes after a long life in our care. The stories on our website reflect the real animals and situations we have worked with, and your support helps us continue helping animals like them. We do our best to keep everything updated, and if you would like to know more about a specific animal, you are always welcome to ask us when you visit or contact us by email.
